Wayne opened his first gym in New York in 1978, then headed west to Phoenix in 1985 to compete and coach at the highest level. In 1988 he was crowned Mr. Natural Universe — the pinnacle of drug-free bodybuilding — before opening All In One Fitness in September 1998.
Twenty-five years on, the gym still runs the way Wayne always intended: private, personal, and built entirely on word-of-mouth. Charlene Miller Hammonds
With grace, beauty, and an unshakable spirit, Charlene Miller Hammonds lived a life full of love, adventure, and elegance. She was born on September 18, 1944, in McGhee, Arkansas, the 13th of 14 children to James and Mary Ann Miller. Growing up in such a big family meant her childhood was always full of laughter, energy, and love.
In 1956, the family moved to Bakersfield, California, where Charlene finished school and started shaping a life of her own — always with ambition and a natural sense of style. A little-known fun fact: as a girl, she once babysat none other than Patty Hearst!
Charlene's elegance and poise led her into modeling, and she also worked at Nordstrom for 13 years. Later, she poured her heart into 25 years at Cornelis Hollander Jewelry Designs — never missing a single day, a true reflection of her dedication and strong work ethic.
In 1998, Charlene moved to Phoenix, Arizona, and her life took a beautiful turn. Not long after, she met the love of her life, Wayne Hammonds. That September, they opened All-In-One Fitness, a gym that became much more than a business — it was a community, a place where people found inspiration and encouragement. Charlene and Wayne married on August 18, 2001, and together built a life centered on devotion, health, and joy.
Charlene was preceded in death by her loving parents, James and Mary Ann Miller, and her siblings John W. Miller, Leroy Miller, Jeffery Miller, Juanita Clautell Wynn Gilmore, and Marilyn Mastermor.
She leaves behind her devoted husband, Wayne Hammonds, her daughter, Wendy Norling, and son, Lowell Norling. She is also survived by her brothers, James Miller Jr. and Ivory G. Miller, her sisters, Norma Payton, Glennett Britton, Claudette Griffith, and Gloria Banks, along with over 140 nieces and nephews, and so many dear friends who felt her warmth and kindness.
Charlene's life was truly a beautiful tapestry — woven with love, laughter, resilience, and grace. Though she may not be here with us in person, her spirit, her beauty, and her love will always live on in the hearts of everyone who knew her.
